The 1 Thing You Need to Succeed at ANYTHING. And it Includes Screwing Up.

How many diets, nutrition plans, cleanses or fitness routines have we all started only to last a week, or only a few days? {I can’t even count them on my own 10 fingers…}

How many jobs or promotions did we fight for that we didn’t get? {it’s a part of life ya’ll}

Putting new efforts towards, well, pretty much anything, can be tough. What’s tougher tho – putting even stronger efforts towards a goal or activity that we’ve already tried before, and failed, more than twice. I feel ya, honey. But guess what I learned: failing miserably at something makes us more likely to succeed at that very thing!

Say what?! You heard me.

You’ve got to FAIL to SUCCEED, doll!

You’ve heard of Walt Disney right? Did you know he was fired from his first animation job? FIRED because his boss said he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” {insert shocked emoji face here} In his 30s, Steve Jobs was fired from Apple – the very company he co-FOUNDED! Oprah was even fired from a news reporting gig because she got “too emotionally invested in her stories” and was told she was “unfit for television news.” Totally crazy, right?

In the spirit of the Winter Olympics, think of #bossbabe Lindsey Vonn. If you take just a glimpse at her injury history you’ll see how NOTHING stopped this badass woman from accomplishing her dreams, her purpose, her mission.

I love these examples because these people knew their WHY, their passion.  And went on fighting for the very thing they were told (even by nature) they couldn’t do.

Now, don’t get me wrong here, you can’t just screw up and keep doing the same thing and expect to succeed. Einstein has been credited in saying that, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.” That just won’t cut it, dear. You’ve gotta change it up. You’ve gotta address EXACTLY what went wrong in your failed attempts and fix it in the next round.

Here are 3 steps to follow to dust yourself off & try again – but this time, coming out ON TOP.

STEP 1
: Acknowledge & Embrace Your Failure

  • For real, embrace it, give it a big ol’ hug and say THANK YOU! Thank you, self, for getting me to Day 8 of the Whole30 only to eat a giant slice of fluffy pizza followed by an ice cold beer! You helped me see exactly what I need to focus on for next time. Hopefully I get to at least Day 16 on my next try!
  • This first step is KEY. Sure, you’re gonna need some time to cope, to mourn, to be angry. But after you’ve gotten that out, you need to clearly acknowledge that this failure happened ONLY as a means to guide you through your next attempt.

STEP 2: Know Your Purpose. Know Your Why!

  • You’ve GOT to remember why you started. Why is this important to you? Why are you doing this in the first place?
  • Are you starting a fitness & nutrition plan to lean out, tone up and have more energy? Are you working towards a promotion so you can make more money or boost your LinkedIn cred?
  • Write this all down! Check out my post on keeping & crushing your goals to help get you started on listing out what you want, why you want it, and how you’ll get it.

STEP 3: Keep Showing Up. Outwork Your Previous Self.

  • If at first you don’t succeed, try, try againbut with a twist. You’ve got to write down {in your journal, on your phone, on a post-it on your bathroom mirror} EXACTLY what it was that made you fall.
  • Was is the donuts in the office break room? Too tired for your morning workouts from nightly dates with your hommies Netflix & Instagram? Was it not preparing enough for that sales presentation or negotiation?
  • After you fail and nail down the exact cause {fail & nail! I like it! #failandnail} show up the very next morning with a renewed sense of energy, purpose and motivation, and KEEP-ON-SHOWING-UP every damn day (EDD, u know) working to FIX or completely AVOID the previous failure.

The moral of the story is: if what you’re trying to accomplish is THAT important to you, if it means THAT much to you that you keep trying but you keep failing, THAT’S OK! It’s how you HANDLE the failure that makes you stronger and helps you succeed.

If failure is the single, largest ingredient in the recipe of success – stock it up, own it, bake it up, and watch your dreams come out hot and golden.

Fail forward my friends,
Katie
